Back to Our Trip

I want to try and post some more pictures from our latest adventure! The first day in Lincoln was spent at Farmer Marys!! Aunt Mary really isn't a Farmer, or is she:

First I must say that we traveled from the BIG city of Lincoln to Denmark, KS
A little about Denmark:

Denmark is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, Kansas, United States. One of the first permanent settlements in Lincoln County, it was settled about 1869 by Danish Lutherans who laid the cornerstone for a stone church in 1876. Built of the "post rock" limestone that is so abundant in the county, it was completed in 1880. A bell tower and entry were added in 1901. The village is located 3 miles north of K-18 and still has a community hall, a railroad, and a grain elevator. Denmark is part of "The Amazing 100 Miles". The history and folklore has been described by Ruth Sorensen in "Beyond the Prairie Wind".

Please don't plan on using this beautiful Church in May, it is already reserved for a family wedding!!

I don't think this is still open (?). At least I have never seen it open, please tell me if I am wrong, Andersens!

Here we are, Farmer Mary's! Like I said she really isn't a "Farmer". But, to my kids, she is. Living where we are and traveling to her house my son started calling her Farmer Mary and always asked to visit! I think the Andersens make up the most of the population in the town. If I remember correctly the population is around 20 (give or take a few).

We went to Farmer Mary's to help decorate for Halloween. Our Cousins, Michelle and Devon were still in school for the day so we went to town decorating:

The kids had more fun playing with all the stuff they found in the boxes, I think they could of stayed there for days! After decorating, Farmer Mary thought they needed a little Hot Cocoa.

I have to thank Mary for all the fun she showed us this day! Kailee and Davis think so much of Farmer Mary and going to the "Farm" that they were so tickled to spend the day there.

Some of the little things that always catch my eye when I am there:

I love this! Every time I go into her kitchen, my eyes wonder!

Hello?! All you vintage fans out there! When you schedule your tour to Lincoln make sure you add Farmer Marys to the list!

Why don't my hardwoods look this good? I LOVE the color!

Giraffe's!

I know it's not November yet...

...But I couldn't take the Halloween Background any longer. It was just buggin' me. I went ahead and added some of the Thanksgiving songs we are going to plan on listening to. If you are still wanting Halloween music, it is still there - just have to forward thru to the song you want.

I do REFUSE to start any Christmas music 'til the day after Thanksgiving!! I always feel that Thanksgiving gets forgotten these days with all the Christmas stuff out and about. So, if you are looking for Christmas, you will have to wait. Thanksgiving comes first! :o)

I haven't forgot...

Just been laying horizontal the past few days! I haven't done a thing, No laundry, No vacuuming, Not a single thing. Well, if you count laying in bed and watching Grey's re-runs as something productive, then I have been pretty busy the past couple of days.

I am feeling better today, planning on going vertical. After I open my eyes and see the damage of what everyone left for me I may just decided to go back to horizontal :o)

On an other note, Sean and I are feeling bad. We had to tell our in-laws NOT to come visit this weekend. Us, telling someone they can not visit?! With all the germs going around I would hate to be responsible for passing it on to them. Dave started his chemo again last week and Alyene also started a new pill too. We would love to see them!!! We love it when they are here - especially with Halloween. I don't think the kids have ever celebrated Halloween with family before, that would of been fun! I know we will be thinking of them - remind me I need to take pictures!

On our way to Lincoln!

I have been trying to figure out how to organize all the pictures that I want to share (still can't believe I brought my camera and actually remembered to use it)! Sean had another trip he was off on for work this past week and the kids were out of school on Thursday and Friday for conferences. So, spur of the moment (like we do everything in this family) we decided to head for Grammis.

Of course we all woke up extra early with excitement so we just left. I loaded the van, kids, dogs and we were off! I made the kids wait 'til we hit Topeka before they could watch a movie - mean mom I know. The whole time they were whinning and I couldn't figure it out. We didn't have movies in the car when we were little and we still had fun on trips - Oh, yeah... We were NOT strapped into uncomfortable car seats. Our seats were usually used as tables instead of actually spots for our behinds. I was glad I made them wait because once we get passed Manhattan the radio stations are pretty 'lame' and I would rather listen to Hannah Montanna or Toy Story anyways. :)

The kids always get so excited once we hit the wind propler things (I so want to call them 'windmills'). Kailee got her camera out and took these as we were driving by them:

Oh, and for those that know me, know that I have this weird obsession with taking pictures of the sign for the city (or state) that we are in. I really didn't want to stop (it was so cold) by myself with the kids and with the dogs in the car. So, Kailee took this one as I tried to drive real S-L-O-W (putting the pressure on an 8 year old - HA HA HA):

Yep! We are almost there! Here we come, Lincoln, KANSAS! Oh, please tell me you have heard of it? Here are a few facts:

Conveniently located at the intersection of Highways K-14 and K-18 is the City of Lincoln, originally named Lincoln Center and known as the post rock capital of Kansas.

The population is 1200 (which is really hard for me to believe!!) That must include all the surrounding farms and way out there in the middle of nowhere people too!

There is a Grocery Store (called the Lincoln Grocery Store). A very small simple store to get the things you 'Need'. There is also a Duckwalls!!!! A highlight of everyone's trip is always Duckwalls! I remember as a kid, we were always handed a few dollars and sent out the door. We would walk to Duckwalls and totally explore!(such a rhymer I know). There is also a little clothing store (I will touch on that later), a little movie theater, and on the outside of town there is a Pizza Hut! Still can't belive it - but it is true. They have a Pizza Hut.

Kailee actually took this as we drove by - Whoa! Looks like they are busy! :)

They do have a beautiful Courthouse! I love it:

Beautiful, hun?

I could go on and on - you will just have to plan a trip and explore all the fun things of Lincoln! (Call me first, I know some pretty good people that make great tour guides!)

All of this and we still haven't reached our destination! We did finally arrive after our 4 hour drive (had to stop a few times with the kids and dogs). Made it just in time for lunch! Why does everything always taste better at Grandma's? Yummy turkey and veggies were waiting for us! So good! Grammi had plans to attend a funeral that afternoon as we had plans to head to Farmer Marys!!!! I will add all that next...

So much to share!

So, as I just wrote below we had a great 4 day weekend at Grammis! Even better? I remember to take pictures!!!! 412 pictures to be exact! I am planning on posting a bunch today - so hard to decide which ones! Here is one to let you know of things to come:

The Damage is Done!

Do you ever have those mornings when you wake up and immediately dread rolling out of bed for the fear ahead? Today, that was me. I just had a great 4-day weekend with the kids at Grammis. A perfect weekend really, more on that to come.

I even prepared before I went. I knew what was to come, all of Grammis great cooking (she makes the best Chicken noodles ever), I won't even touch the subject of Chocolate Chip Cookies!!!! The fact was, I thought I was ready for this great 4 day weekend. I had gone to Sams before we left town. I got Grapefruit, Apples, pears, peppers, did I mention apples? I even picked up some fat free carmel apple dip as a treat for all the apples I got. I picked up all this fruit preparing in advance for what I knew was coming in those 4 days (Have you ever tried my Grammi's Chocolate Chip Cookies???????).

So, this morning I seriously dreaded the thought of rolling over and pulling the covers back. I knew that I had to face the reality of what I had just done the past 4 days. In fact, I stayed in bed just a bit longer thinking I wouldn't have to face it. (hmmm, maybe if I roll over and fall back asleep...)

I did finally get up. I did finally have to face the reality - HOLY CRUD is all I can say!!!!!! An extra 4 pounds were added!!!!!!! Can you believe it! 4 pounds???!!! I knew it. I knew it. Back to bed I went! I pulled those covers up and closed my eyes. This is a nightmare. Let's try it again...

So, after my adult temper tantrum of the morning, I decided, oh well - those are the best Chocolate Chip Cookies in the world! And, I would never pass up that Chicken Noodle soup! (I won't even go into the other things I ate) I did have such a great time! It really was worth it.

So, today I begin to undo those last 4 days. I will sweat off those Chocolate Chip cookies (It's ok Grammi - they really were worth it)! I will crunch off that yummy Dr. Pepper (that tastes so good after raking leaves).

In fact, (as I now throw the covers back) this is a GOOD thing! This is what some would call "MOTIVATION"!

Thoughts for my Sis

My Sister is going through a rough time, just wanted her to know that I am thinking about her. She has a lot on her plate and trying to decide what to do. Here's hoping she thinks hard and knows that we support her.

She has been blessed with a beautiful daughter that we all love just as well!

So, Melissa, stand strong!

Rylee - cutest thing ever!

Melissa and Rylee - I think I need updated pictures!

Q...R...

S and T!

Oh, if you could only hear some of our 'corny', 'crazy', family conversations!

I wish I would of got this on video to let you hear how it went down.

I was getting ready to head to bed, I yelled, "Goodnight K" in a silly, loud voice, I yelled, "Goodnight, D" in a sillier, even louder voice and then it goes down...

Kailee: Hey Mom, I just figured it out!

Me: What?

Kailee: You know. L,M,N,O,P, Q, R, S... AND T!

Me: Yep! That's right SEAN and TAMARA... We belong to together

Kailee, ME, Davis, and SEAN: The whole family laughing out loud.

Does this mean Kailee is going to marry a Jake, Josh, Joe, or a Luke, Landon, Lane? Oh who knows, but it was a fun chuckle for the night!

Onto the next room...

Oh, where to begin...

the hideous wallpaper first!

So, this is going to now become Sean's Office for work. This is how I see it when it is finished:

Yes, I know it won't look just like this (why not? I LOVE it!). The room is so much smaller than this. But there is one thing I would like to have - the built-in bookcases. I would love to have the floor to ceiling attached bookcases (with the shelves and doors on the bottom) along with the sitting bench under the window! Wouldn't that be cute? I brought Sean into the room and asked him to vision it then showed him the picture. Now, the important question, "Hun, do you think you could make that?"

Imagine him standing there...the smirk slowly emerges... "Of course I could build that". Oh men! So, I wait a minute for him to come down off his 'high' and ask again, "No, really. Do you think you could build that?" I am thinking only 12inches deep as it is a small room!!!

What do you think? Go for it, or save it for another room?

A New Room

Davis' new room is getting there!

Please excuse the blue tape. The window really could use one more coat and maybe a curtain...

Just need some bed rails to raise it off the floor and that new comforter on that awaits his birthday.

After selling his car bed, I headed to Nebraska Furniture Mart, right to the clearance corner.. Yep, I was so excited to be there at just the right moment. Got $80 for the bed. Paid $80 for the dresser. The kid is so excited to have a dresser.

Maybe a curtain for the closet? I have the door, but don't like it. It just gets in the way and takes up more room...

All that's left? Just another coat for the window and a few posters to hang on the wall (Can't wait for the birthday!) Not bad for $50, hun?

A Million Dollars for a Monday?

Laying in bed this morning (not wanting to get up), I wondered how nice it would be just to have a million dollars. Do you know what you would do with a million dollars? I thought I did too. Then, it hit me... So, I have a million dollars - what am I really going to do with it? After pulling the covers back up and around me I thought to myself I know exactly what I would do with that million dollars:

1. First, and foremost, I would pay off my mortgage. I could say I owned my home!

I would not go and buy another one. I would stay just where I am. It is only a million dollars you know.

2. I would write a check and give some to the church. I know it is very selfish of me to pay my mortgage off first. I need to work on it - please help me. But, after paying my mortgage, I would take the kids to our church and see what we could do to help!

This is a pic of the new church! It is amazing inside!

3. Next would be to fund the college accounts for the kids. Am I boring you? Remember it is only a million dollars!

Now, that I am really having fun with this... I get out of bed and go and have a sit with Sean. Here is how it goes:

Me: Morning

Sean: Good morning. (As he is already up and working)

Me: What would you do with a million dollars?

Sean: Huh? What? (with this look that I am crazy - after all, it is 6 in the morning and my first words of the day are 'what would you do with a million dollars?')

Me: Seriously, if you had a million dollars what would be the first thing that you did?

After a way toooooo looooonnnnnnggg of a pause (I was getting a little irritated that he was not playing along with my conversation starter of the morning), he said he would pay off the house! There you have it... This is why we are married - HA!

So, Sean is not excited about playing my little mind game this morning. No biggie, I will blog about it I thought. As I started typing this, Kailee says we really need a new tv. And if she had a million dollars, she would buy us a new tv.

I thought about it... Yeah, we could use a new tv. After all, it is only 27 inches (corner to corner), will not work unless you have a remote (the buttons are broke), we have had it for 17 years... ok, maybe a new tv with our million dollars:

Want to play my game with me? Comment and let me know, What would you do with a million dollars?

The Power of an Apron

I know this will sound corny and crazy to some. I know you will laugh (feel free to laugh at me too - I can take it). I have had this conversation with my Mother a few times...

It's all about the apron!

Do you own one? Do you wear it? Do you know what I am about to say?

I got my first apron about 2 years ago and it changed my life. It transforms me into this person. This person that gets so much more done!

I have told my Mom several times that I swear it is true. I told her to give it a shot - guess what? She got one too!

I bring this up now as I was cleaning out a closet today and to my surprise, I found my apron!! I have missed you so! Maybe that has been my problem. I showed Sean who laughed at me (as I am sure you are doing the same). I thought about calling my mother, but no, I did the next best thing...

I googled it! I knew there had to be someone else out there that understood. I didn't spend much time on it. But on the second page of results I did find this. Please note, I did not change anything. All I did was 'copy' and 'paste'. It may be wether lengthy, but I am sure you will be amuzed...

"One day not too long ago I was struggling with the boys over some minor details which come up when a lot of people live in a small shack in the woods. Details like the value of picking one’s dirty clothes up off of the living room floor when company has been spotted driving up the mountain. The boys were unusually stubborn that particular day. Rather than fight with them over their household responsibilities I picked up the dirty clothes myself and crammed them into the washing machine. I ran some soapy water in the sink to get a start on the dishes before the company arrived.

Now usually I am not one to hold a grudge over small disagreements like laundry on the living room floor. This one settled in my brain though, and I felt compelled to mull over it for several days. It was the outright insubordination which offended me the most. After I figured that out I went in search of solutions.

About the same time I was in the process of Spring Cleaning. I was having a great deal of trouble motivating myself to wash the walls in the kitchen and mop the back porch where the cats live (blessedly with a doggie door so they don’t need litter boxes).

Well, the more I worried about these twin dilemmas the more I felt the need to discuss them with the queen of solutions, my momma Darthulia. As I suspected she had the perfect solution. Darthulia told me I needed a uniform or costume which would reassure myself and others of my intention and status in the home. She claimed it would remind me of my duties, inspire me to greater levels of cleanliness (which as a hillbilly I sorely need), and reaffirm my authority in the home.

Darthulia then went on to describe the homemaker’s uniform to me in detail. “Imagine the modern archetype of the housewife.” She began. “Think Donna Reed, or Beaver Cleaver’s mom. They wore full skirts, and stockings, and heels when they vacuumed. But you knew they were doing housework because they had their aprons on. A string of beads graced the necks of their classic shirtwaist dresses, and a lacy bibbed apron proclaimed their role as matriarch in charge of household management.”

I only have a fleeting memory of Donna Reed. I sort of wish she came on television regularly so I could take notes but she doesn’t in my area so I am stuck looking for other heroines-of-the-home to model myself after. Most of what momma said made sense to me though. That very day, I put on a full skirt, stockings, sensibly low high heeled shoes, and a string of pearly white beads. Then I sat down at my sewing machine and ran up a couple of bibbed aprons, decorated with lace and ribbons.

I made up the pattern as I went along using a small rectangle for the first bib and a heart shape for the second bib. Then I stitched lace around the edges of the bib and attatched it to a simple tie with a full apron skirt gathered to the waist. I made them short waisted so they would fit my maternal figure a bit better, and voila, I was set. I put the first apron on, a creamy white or ecru, and looked in the mirror to admire my handiwork. I expected to see myself staring back at me, probably looking a little silly in this frilly piece of confection designed to protect my clothing.

Boy howdy, was I in for a surprise. In the mirror I saw a vision of the homemaker I have always strived to become staring back at me. Her cheery face glistened in the sunshine. Her hair tied up neatly in bun looked authoritative, and compassionate all at the same time. The apron covered several figure flaws and accentuated the fertile curves of the woman I saw in the mirror. This woman had purpose. She had status. She had clout. I stood there, contemplating the wonder of the homemaker that shone through my image in the mirror. “This is who I want to be” I told myself. “This is the Keeper of the home, with a capital ‘K’. ”

I wear my aprons every day now. I have made more, in different colors and configurations so as to be pleasing to my senses. I have come to believe they are a like lacy bits of lingerie, only worn on the outside, and a quite a bit more respectable. When I put on my aprons the children mind me better, wandering visitors immediately know my role as a stay at home mom. Door to door religious missionaries assume I am a virtuous woman and cheerfully move on to the next house. Fred thinks I look cute as a button, and neighbor children hug me more often.

I like my aprons. They have changed my life, raising my standards, inspiring me to greater feats of home making skill, and making me more effective as a parent. Whoever thought that a dollars worth of fabric and lace could effect so many changes on one woman and one family? Since my success with aprons I have become a true believer. I am now called to spread the word among my fellow housewives. Join the crusade by sharing your love of aprons with friends, family and internet buddies around the world. Together we will change the face of the House Wife, the world over."

some of it is corny, I agree. But, there it is - someone agrees with me! I have my apron set out for me. I plan on wearing it, come and see!

My apron is a little old and 'blah'. I started looking around and fell in love:

I really need to learn how to sew...

What are your Dreams?

Do you ever wake up and wonder who you are or where you belong?

Have you ever wondered what happened to you?

I have been having a really hard time this past year, trying to find myself again. I am blessed to have the role of Mother, wife, cook, and housekeeper.

It has now been a year and a half since I became a Stay-at-home mom for the second time. I love the time I get with my children. I love being here for them - or am I? Yes, my children know that I love them and I am there to care for them. I am just saying some days you wake up, look in the mirror, and wonder where you are (please tell me you have had this happen before too?).

Today, I asked myself where am I? Where are all those dreams I had? Where is that fun, bright, girl that Sean fell in love with (Now, I am certain if you asked him, he would say that I am right here.).

Sometimes, I get so caught up in the day-to-day things that I forget about me. I am there somewhere! My Husband and children deserve to have the very best of me and I am determined to find her once again.

Did you lose sight of your dreams? Have they been misplaced, or set aside to collect dust?

One of those Ahhhhh Moments

While outside taking pictures of the kids playing in the leaves yesterday, Sean pulled in from his trip. I got this picture just as Sean was getting out of the car and I just LOVE it!

Kailee is such a Daddy's Girl...

Leaves, Leaves, Leaves!

What is more fun than playing in the leaves?

Where's Davis?

Add some friends to the mix...

And you have one of the best afternoons, ever!

I do have to take a minute to explain what they are doing here though. A few weeks ago, Mr. Alex Epperson (a.k.a missing in these photos) and Davis got this brite idea to make the biggest pile of leaves ever to jump in. Now, before we knew this was their plan, this is what happened:

Alex and Buster came over to play one fall afternoon when Sean and I noticed that the boys were outside raking leaves and putting them in trash bags. Sean and I were so proud of the two boys that we kept thinking of what we could do to thank them for raking and bagging all the leaves. Sean went outside to mow the yard (especially since the leaves were being raked and were out of the way). Sean noticed that Alex kept running into the garage and kept getting trash bags (so he thought anyways). He didn't think to stop him - he was so excited that they were bagging them all that he could care less. So, what happened? Alex and Davis raked the entire cul-de-sac of leaves!!! Yep, every house...Front AND back yard!!! Really cool, hun? Um, not so much. Want to know why? They were all in our backyard!!!!! The boys were only using ONE trash bag and were running back and forth dumping the leaves in OUR backyard and then running back to someone else's to grab another 'load'. I am So BUMMED that I did not get a picture of all the leaves in the backyard! Once Sean and I figured it out, we could not stop laughing! They were having so much fun, how could we stop them? Sean ended up bagging 7 bags of those big huge yellow trash bags of leaves for the trash guys that week. Your welcome to all the neighbors!!

So, yesterday I had my camera ready to take some pictures of what I thought was to come again. Only, when they got all the leaves bagged they decided it wasn't enough for the MASSIVE pile they were wanting to create. Where are the leaves? All in bags sitting in Kyra's garage this time - HA HA HA! They are going to wait a few more days and add to their 'stash' to create the biggest pile ever! (I am just hoping maybe it stay's at Kyra's this time?)

The kids had so much fun yesterday afternoon raking leaves and bagging, they were outside for over 6 hours! What a great fall day!

Halloween Music

I update the playlist with some of the fun Halloween music the kids and I have been listening to lately. I added just a few - feel free to have a listen!
